Fine rugs
Hand-knotted work needs a bath, not a wand
A hand-knotted wool or silk rug holds pounds of dry soil deep in its foundation, and its dyes were never designed for hot detergent. Cleaning one in place moves dirt around and risks bleeding. We take it to the plant instead.

What we see on rugs that come in
Send a photo by text when you call — most rugs can be diagnosed from one good picture of the pile and one of the back.
Pet urine in the foundation
The reason most fine rugs come to us. It needs a neutralising bath, not a surface pass, or the smell returns with the first humid week.
Grit ground into the base
A rug can hold several pounds of soil before it looks dirty. Dusting removes it before washing — skip that step and you're making mud.
Dye bleed from a previous clean
Often fixable with an acidic rinse and controlled drying, though not always fully. We'll tell you what's realistic before we start.
Moth damage in wool
Larvae eat the pile from the back. Washing plus a moth treatment stops the spread; reweaving repairs what's gone.
Sun fade and crushed pile
Rotating a rug annually prevents most of it. Grooming and pile lifting restore some depth, but fading is permanent.
Curling edges and worn fringe
Binding and fringe work happen during the same wash cycle, so the rug only leaves your home once.

A hand-knotted Persian, a silk Tabriz, an antique Aubusson or a fine Tibetan carpet cannot be cleaned properly with a wand and a hose. They need to be submerged, rinsed until the water runs clean, and dried flat under controlled conditions — none of which is possible in a home.
So those rugs travel. We wrap and tag your rug at your door, bring it to our facility, and put it through a full wash cycle that takes days rather than the two hours an in-home clean would take.
- A dusting floor. Mechanical dust removal drives out the dry grit sitting in the foundation — often several pounds of it — before a drop of water is used. Wash a rug without dusting it first and you are making mud in the knots.
- A wash pit, not a wand. Full immersion in cool water with pH-correct solution, agitated by hand, then rinsed repeatedly until the run-off is clear.
- A controlled drying room. Rugs dry flat, under airflow and heat we set, in hours rather than days. Slow drying is what causes dye migration, mildew and that permanent musty smell.
- A repair bench. Fringe, binding, moth damage and reweaving are handled in the same cycle, so your rug only leaves the house once.
- Insured, tagged and photographed. Every rug is logged with photographs on arrival, stored in a secure climate-controlled space, and covered while it is in our care.
How your rug is priced
We don't list rug prices anywhere on this site, and that's deliberate. A rate card can't tell the difference between a machine-made runner and a hand-knotted silk Tabriz with a urine problem. Yours is priced by the technician who collects it.
- The technician inspects the rug at your door — fibre, knot construction, dye stability, wear, odour and any damage.
- You get a written condition report and a firm price before the rug is wrapped.
- Nothing is washed, treated or repaired until you approve that number.
- If the dusting stage reveals something hidden, we call you first. It never simply appears on the invoice.
- Not happy with the quote? We leave the rug where it is, at no charge.
What we fix
What the technician is looking at
These are the things that move the price up or down on a high-value rug. It is why an honest quote needs eyes on the rug rather than a number read off a chart.
Fibre and construction
Hand-knotted wool, silk, viscose, cotton foundation or a blend — each washes differently and carries a different amount of risk. Knot density and whether the rug is single- or double-wefted change the labour involved.
Dye stability
Older vegetable dyes and some hand-dyed reds are prone to bleeding. Every colour block is tested before washing, and unstable dyes need a cooler, slower, more expensive process.
Size, weight and pile
A dense 9x12 wool rug can weigh over a hundred pounds wet. Thick shag, heavy Tibetan pile and oversized room rugs take longer to wash, longer to dry and more hands to move.
Contamination
Pet urine that has crystallised in the foundation needs multiple neutralising baths. Smoke, mould and flood damage all add cycles — and occasionally mean we tell you the rug is not worth saving.
Repairs and restoration
Worn fringe, unravelling selvedge, moth holes and previous bad repairs are quoted separately. Reweaving is hand work priced by the hour, and we always show you the area first.
Age, value and handling
Antique, heirloom and collectible pieces get slower handling, extra documentation and additional insurance cover. That care is part of the price, and it is why those rugs are quoted individually.

Do you clean rugs at my home or take them away?
Both, and the rug decides which. Synthetic and machine-made rugs clean well in place. Wool, silk, hand-knotted, antique and urine-damaged rugs go to our warehouse, because they need a dust bath, full immersion and controlled drying — none of which can happen on your floor.
How much does fine rug cleaning cost?
We don't publish a rate, because no two rugs are the same job — and any company quoting a fine rug over the phone is guessing. The technician inspects yours at your door and hands you a written price before it goes anywhere. If you don't like the number, the rug stays where it is and you owe nothing.
Why do you take expensive rugs to a warehouse instead of cleaning them at my home?
Because the three things a fine rug actually needs are impossible in a living room: mechanical dusting to drive out the grit buried in the foundation, full immersion in a wash pit with repeated rinsing, and flat drying under controlled airflow. An in-home wand clean skips all three, which is how rugs end up with dye bleed, a musty smell, or dirt pushed deeper into the knots.
How do I know my rug is safe while it is with you?
Every rug is photographed and tagged on arrival, logged against your condition report, and kept in a secure climate-controlled space. It is covered by our insurance for the whole time it is in our care, and it comes back wrapped and laid out for you.
Can you clean a genuinely valuable or antique rug?
Yes, and those are the ones we most want to see before quoting. Antique, collectible and heirloom pieces get slower handling, extra documentation and additional insurance cover. If we think a rug belongs with a specialist restorer rather than in a wash cycle, we will tell you that instead of taking the job.
How long does off-site rug cleaning take?
Seven to ten days for wool and up to two weeks for silk or rugs needing repair. Rush service is available. We collect and return free within our service area.
Can you save a rug a pet has ruined?
Usually yes, and this is exactly why fine rugs shouldn't be cleaned in the home. Urine crystallises in the foundation and needs full submersion with a neutralising bath to flush out — surface cleaning just moves the smell around and can set the dyes.
Will the colours run on my Persian or Oriental rug?
We dye-test every colour block before washing. Rugs with unstable dyes get a cold-water process with acidic rinse and fast controlled drying, which is what prevents the bleeding you see on rugs done in a driveway.
Do you repair fringe and binding?
Yes. Fringe replacement, edge binding, moth-damage reweaving and hole repair are quoted per rug after inspection, and are usually done during the same wash cycle.
How often should rugs be washed?
Every one to three years for a rug in a living area, or annually with pets or a busy hallway. Regular vacuuming between washes does more for a rug's lifespan than anything else.
Can you clean a viscose or 'art silk' rug?
Carefully, and with realistic expectations. Viscose is wood pulp — it yellows and flattens when wet, so it gets a low-moisture method. Anyone promising a viscose rug will look new again is overselling.
Do you clean the rug pad too?
We inspect it and tell you honestly. Old crumbling pads are usually cheaper to replace than to clean, and a failing pad is what damages the floor underneath.
Can you store my rug over the summer?
Yes. Rugs are washed, moth-treated, wrapped and stored, then delivered back when you want them. Ask for storage pricing when you book the wash.
